How Does Omeprazole Work During the digestion process, the stomach produces acid to help break down food substances. The oesophagus is protected from these acids by the oesophageal sphincter muscles. The muscles allow a one way system for food to get to the intestines while acids remain down. When the muscles weaken, acid passes down, resulting in acid reflux and causing heartburn.  Frequent acid may be a result of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Omeprazole is a prescription medicine for GORD and other similar stomach conditions. It works by suppressing the activity of proton pumps, the proteins which produce acids in the stomach. This decreases the amount of acid in the stomach, relieving the symptoms of heartburn.
